See you on 1 December

I promised myself that I would finish the www.parishwalk.com website by the end of the week.
With a minute or so to spare, just time to say a public thank you to my wife (of nearly 24 years) Marie (above). Even I don't know how she puts up with me!
Thanks for your support and see you on 1 December....unless of course you change channels to www.manxathletics.com

Split times available

Another of the big exercises is complete:

SPLIT TIMES 2008

Its a very large file and I'm afraid that there are loads of blank pages. I'm afraid that I have now reached the "take or leave it" stage!

Enjoy the stats.

The poll was not a wind up

Just in case anyone thought I had tried an out of season April fool, I'm afraid something went wrong with the poll today on the Bravenet site. I could see dozens of votes coming in which were not registering but with a tight timetable to get everything else done today I couldn't spend any time trying to resolve the problem.

Guess what will be on the site on 1 December?

Extra YouTube Film

I couldn't resist a final film. It should be available on YouTube in a few minutes.

Other walks

Six times Parish Walk winner John Cannell in last year's Peel to Douglas Walk (ML)

Most of the race walking events are promoted by Manx Harriers.

There is a special race walking page at:

http://www.manxathletics.com/manxharriers/MHracewalking.htm

If you only select one event, then make it the Empire Garage Peel to Douglas Walk. If you thought that the Parish Walk was wet, you should have been there for the Peel to Douglas last year!
The Isle of Man Veteran Athletes Club also organise a number of walking events and the pick of the bunch here is the Salclear Half Marathon which encourages entries from walkers as well as the runners.
The link is here:
Finally Western AC have for a number of years organised a walk in conjunction with the Western 10 miles and this year it will be held over the same 10 mile course as the run.
Details here:
Their website is here:

End to End Walk

Adrian Cowin - working flat out on the End to End website! (ML)

The White & Healthy End to End Walk is the logical next step for parish walkers although there other walking events on the Isle of Man.

The End to End is organised by the Isle of Man Veteran Athletes Club and Adrian Cowin runs both the club website and a dedicated End to End site at:

http://www.e2ewalk.com/

Parish Walk Committee

Winston, Allan, Raymond, Elizabeth, Debbie, Kevin and Martin pictured in 2006 (ML)
The Parish Walk has been in great hands in recent years with a very strong committee.

They are:

RAYMOND COX

ELIZABETH CORRAN

KAREN KNEALE

ALLAN CALLOW

KEVIN WALMSLEY

MARTIN LAMBDEN

WINSTON LIU

TRACY COOK

DEBBIE WALMSLEY

GEOFF WALMSLEY

Although the event is organised by Manx Harriers, this committee is not the main club committee but one that spends their whole year focused on just one event.

By all accounts they operate as committees should do with everyone taking responsibility for their own well defined but evolving roles.

Unlike some of the people that I have dealt with in the past, they are very responsive to change where it helps the event and the walkers.

Like most organisations we only really take notice of things that go wrong and rarely think about the majority of things that go like clockwork. Hopefully they can soon unwind.

Michael Gray completes the course at 73

Michael Gray pictured after completing the course at 72 last year with daughter Stephanie. He did it again this year at 73 (Photo:Paul Jackson)

Robbie Lambie wrote the following on the forum: " Can we now say with confidence now that Michael Gray is the oldest competitor in the history of the Parish Walk to have completed the 85 miles?

There has been some doubt, a grey area you might say (sorry) about who actually is the oldest. I think after Mike walked it last year, (along with his daughter Steph), he may well have been the oldest finisher but it wasn't certain. I think at 73 years of age this year, Mike may have put this uncertainty to rest. This year he walked it over 23 hours again with Stephanie. Stephanie told me earlier today, such was the weather and the miserable conditions, the pair of them hardly spoke to each other at all during the second half of the race, as they were both just concentrating on putting one foot in front of the other and just eager to get to the finish. Stephanie of course should take credit for walking with her father the last 2 years and helping to create a piece of history.

Stephanie and her mother Olga are great campaigners for the Breast Cancer Charity and have helped raise vast amounts of money over the years as a result. A great family indeed.Mike of course finished in the first Parish in 1961 finishing 5th in the days when they walked in trousers and ordinary shoes and had no real support cars to follow them. Some of them in those days had probably worked just prior to the race as well. They were tough in those days obviously."

The uncertainty arose because I haven't always had the ages of walkers and it was previously claimed that another walker had completed the course at the age of 73 which I don't think is correct.

PS Michael also has the record for the biggest gap between finishes - 46 years from 1961 to 2007.

Number of walkers to reach each Parish

I've just published more of my work from last night:

Number of walkers to reach each church

There is a mine of information here.

For the number of starters, I have used the number to be listed in the results at any checkpoint. Therefore I have 1385 this year compared to 1399 issued by the organisers. I'm not sure whether 1399 actually started or whether that was the number that registered. As far as I am aware, there is no method for calculating the number that start only the number that register.

Perhaps that information is available now but it certainly wasn't in previous years so for consistency I have stayed with the number who are listed in the results.

Just looked at my photos for the first time!

Its exactly six days since I rattled off 450 photos at Braddan - and I've only just looked at them for the first time.

That was only because I was searching for a picture of someone that I want to feature. Although I didn't find that picture I saw loads of people I didn't even know were taking part. I've not had time to study the results in detail either.

Get involved for 2009

Some of the best ideas for further improvement to the Clerical Medical Parish Walk come from the competitors themselves but nearly all of them involve extra work and therefore require extra helpers.

Could you get involved and help out next year? For example, it makes life easier for chief marshal if one person can take responsiblity for a section of the course and bring in their own team.

The organisers often get approached from commercial bodies wanted to become involved - but they do it far too close to the event. Now is the time to start talking to race director Raymond Cox.

If you want to help next year, here are three of the principal contacts:

Raymond Cox (race director)

Elizabeth Corran (race secretary)

Winston Liu (chief marshal)

Who will win next year?

Just for a bit of fun, as I am rounding up the website updates later today, I though I would judge public opinion on who will win next year.

Will Jock Waddington go on to dominate the event? Will Sean Hands or Robbie Callister come back to win again? Will one of the top race walkers like Steve Partington or Peter Kaneen fully commit themselves next year?

Of course, I don't know if any of them will even take part so, as I say, its only a bit of fun.

Can't get away from the Parish Walk

After finishing the website last night I sat down to get away from the Parish Walk and find out what else was going on in the Isle of Man - very little according to the Manx Independent. The front page, inside front page, leader column, 8 page full out, back page, most of the sports pages and even the announcements page featured the Parish Walk! Great coverage. Only one gripe - the http://www.parishwalk.com/ website does not appear to exist in the rest of the media even though it has been the source of the statistics for so many years. Likewise, where would we would without the Manx Telecom sponsored Sportident timing - its amazing how quickly we take these for granted.

Statistics update

There were still 616 people checking out the parishwalk.com website yesterday (811 the day before).

There have now been 725,538 photo hits on the fotopic site.

The four YouTube videos have amassed 6,079 views.

Between Lonan to Onchan

I reckon that I am somewhere between Lonan and Onchan in my slog through this blog and I'm certainly not doing another lap!

I am finishing within my own time limits but to finish tonight's session, here are some more split times. This time they are between Jurby and Maughold. I am sure that there will be a few interesting interpretations - one that caught my eye in a 10 second review was that Terry Moffat was only half a minute different each year!

Growth in the 40 mile club

The average number of walkers reaching Kirk Michael (a little under 40 miles) between 1974 and 1995 was 33.

Compare that average with the last four years:

2005 - 300
2006 - 442
2007 - 376
2008 -317

So even on a "bad" year when the weather caused so many people to call an early halt to their walk, there were 10 times as many people who reached Peel as over the 22 year period!

Above average number of finishers this year

Contrary to quite a few opinions, there were above average number of finishers this year.

9% of the starters made it to the finish compared to an average since 1974 of 8.1%.

Although last year there were "only 153" finishers compared to 163 the previous year, that was the record in percentage terms with 14% making it back to Douglas.

The other best years were 2006 and 1985 (12%), 1981 (10%) and there were 9% in 1989 and 1992.

Short video of Jock

Here is the short video of Jock a few minutes after his great win. When I try to edit it I loose the sound, so here it is complete raw.

The big one

I have just re-published:

ALL WALKERS SINCE 1960 (finishers only until 1974)

There are now 13,919 records in the list!!

Please email changes to murray@manxathletics.com

Changes received by 9 pm tomorrow will go in version 2.

Changes after that time will go into near year's version.

If you prefer to be listed as Steve or Stephen (particularly if you are listed in different forms of your name in different years) then please let me know.

Split times Maughold to the finish

I've just lost 45 minutes. Whilst trying to convert a table of the number of finishers at each church since 1974 into a different format I corrupted the data. Anyone near Ballasalla may have heard the screams! So that one will have to wait until this evening.

So to ensure that the blog readers get their statistical fix, I did some quick calculations to see how much the weather affected times from Maughold to the finish (compared to last year).

The results were quite surprising as it was Ray Potts and Michael George who were battling for the runner up spot last year who had the fastest times.

Here they are:

Top three men

Paul Jackson, who produces the excellent www.manxharriers.com site, has a photo of the top three men in the Clerical Medical Parish Walk from the Villa Marina on Tuesday night.

I was at the Villa last night and saw quite a few parish walkers at the KT Tunstall concert.

Manx Independent today

Isle of Man Sports Editor - John Watterson pictured in the Looneys of Ramsey Duathlon (ML)
The days of waiting for the newspapers to see the results for the first time may be well gone but its always part of the Parish Walk experience to read the reports and view the pictures of the event in The Manx Independent which will be published today.

John Watterson always goes beyond the call of duty to bring you the coverage which is grown in parallel with the event.

I've got newspaper cuttings of the Parish Walk since 1974 and you would find it hard to believe how little there was at one time in comparison to now.

If I were a competitor I would save today's paper as a souvenir.
NB John's namesake has finished the Parish Walk but despite John (above) running and cycling regularly, has not featured in the event.

Rosemarie Crellin - 9 finishes averaging less than 19 hours

Roey Crellin leaves Bride in the 2004 event (ML)

Rosemarie Crellin may not have featured as much in the coverage this year but she continues to make her mark in the event as one of the fastest andmost consistent female walkers in the history of the event.

She is the third fastest ever walker (behind only Sandra Brown and Sue Biggart) and has the second most number of finishes with 9 (only Irene Taggart has more with 11).

She has the 7th and 8th fastest times on record - her best is 17.12.19 from 2003 when she won.

Her time this year of 18:32:30 was faster than last year and well inside he raverage of 18:51:01.

Here are her 9 finishing performances by year:

Janice Quirk - 4th fastest woman ever

Janice Quirk at Lezayre on Saturday evening (ML).

Janice Quirk's rise through the Parish Walk rankings has been remarkable quick.

She completed the course last year at the very first attempt in 19:01:04 and improved to 17:26:12 this year and is ranked behind only Sandra Brown, Sue Biggart and Rosemarie Crellin on the all time list.

Her time is the 10th best female performance ever recorded.

Fastest ever debuts

I've updated the list of the first time finishers by fastest time:

Please note that the times are for the FIRST FINISH and not for the FIRST START.

Junior results as pdf

The results from the junior races are now available in pdf format.

Junior men 2008

Junior women 2008

Interesting to note that there were nearly twice as many women as men in the junior categories - 38 to 20.

Martin Critchley's photos

Martin has just published photos from the presentation here.

343 personal bests since 1960

Henry Harvey - the most improved walker ever when he won in 1961(Pic ML).

Michael George walks towards a 5 hour improvement in 2006 (ML)

I've just finished another exercise - recalculating all of the personal best times ever set in the event!I picked up a few errors in the previous (2006) version of this list as a few people who had walked slower than their best one year were calculated against this slower time rather than their previous best.Hope that this is of interest:

Veterans are the majority

I campaigned for several years to end the veterans' race to Peel on the basis that veterans made up the majority of the finishers. The original thinking was that it was the young men that would be capable of walking 85 miles and that veterans (and women) should walk a shorter distance (to Peel).

The prizes continued to be awarded to this point but many veterans forfeited their veterans prize to take a full finishers award. But there was often confusion about the rules.

My point is proven again when I have just calculated that male veterans made up 53% of the finishers and all veterans 77%.

Here are the numbers:

Senior Men - 23
Senior women - 4
Veteran men - 64
Veteran women - 34

I had hoped to write more this lunchtime but I have just been ironing out some problems with the statistics that John Watterson was working to for the Independent.

Jock pictures

The final update of the day has been to replace the static picture of Jock Waddington on his way to victory with a revolving selection of his big day.

All finishers lists completed

You can now access:

Every finisher by name

and:

Every finisher by year (in order of finish)

I've added a new field "order". This is a serial number from 1 (the first finisher in 1960) to 1231 (the final finisher in 2008).

10% of total finishers this year

I've just realised that although the number of finishers of 121 is well down on 153 of last year and 163 of the previous year, it is still 10% of the total ever (1213).

Pdf of number of finishers published

In connection with the previous post, the lists of number of finishers are available at:

Number of finishes per walker (alphabetically)

and

Number of finishes per walker (by number)

If you noticed a gap in the posts, here is why

David Collister - 25 finishes (ML)

No I hadn't gone to the pub but I was tempted to!

I have been reconciling the 1213 between the number of finishers per person and here is the result:

Full list of 249 full course female performances

The above has now been published at:

Sandra Brown - top female performance ever

Sandra Brown when she last walked in the Isle of Man in the 100 miles of 2006 (ML)

Many of you may not have heard of Sandra Brown. The Surrey AC athlete is the most prolific female 100 mile walker of all time.

Last year I compiled my all time top 10 Parish Walkers and I ranked Sandra number 2, behind Sean Hands but ahead of Robbie Callister and Derek Harrison. In my view she was very close to being the best of all.

She won in 1998. Not only was it her debut; not only was it the record time, not only did she come second in the Parish Walk but she did that in the knowledge that she had to keep going for another 15 miles. The Centurions championship walk was held in conjunction with the Parish Walk that year and walkers had to complete a further 15 miles up and down the promenade.

She returned to the Isle of Man in 2006 when the same event was held at the National Sports Centre and finished second again, this time to Sean Hands.

To see my choice of the top 10 of all time (compiled in 2007) visit http://www.parishwalk.co.uk/2007/2007prerace.html

Sue Biggart's time 3rd best ever

Sue Biggart smiles her way through the rain at Lezayre on her way to the third fastest time ever (Richard Jamieson)

Although I knew that Sue was on local record pace for much of Saturday's walk, I hadn't recorded that her finishing time was the third best ever.
On the downside, I recorded her as having six of the top seven times when it should have been five of the top 6.
Sue's average time in the last five years has been 16:46:49 - remarkable!
The top 10 performances of all time by women are: (name, time, year, overall position)
Sandra Brown 16:16:36 1998 2
Sue Biggart 16:23:14 2006 4
Sue Biggart 16:42:09 2008 5
Sue Biggart 16:48:32 2004 3
Sue Biggart 16:49:46 2007 7
Sue Biggart 16:53:54 2005 3
Rosemarie Crellin 17:12:19 2003 4
Rosemarie Crellin 17:16:44 2006 10

79% of all finishers are men

Sean Hands on his way to setting the fastest ever lap in 2006 (picture by Mike Lambden at Kirk Michael)

There have been 1213 recorded laps since 1960 of which 964 have been by men and 249 by women.

The full list has just been published at:

http://www.parishwalk.co.uk/2008/PWfast.pdf

72% of finishers are men

Of the 121 finishers, 87 were men and 34 were women.

Blogs

In case you were not using the website prior to the event, I should draw your attenttion to the three bloggers on the site. You can read the blogs via the "Pre-Race" link on the top on the homepage or from the links below.

Michael George was the most prolific and consistent blogger and you can catch up with his stories at http://michaelsparishblog.blogspot.com/ He has promised to write more on his blog yet.

Richard Wild has signed off his after his first attempt at the Parish Walk and you can read his tales here http://wildparish.blogspot.com/

I tried to get three people with three contrasting ambitions to write. If nothing else I achieved this with a walker who got all the way, one that covered 60 miles and one that didn't start.

But Kerry Sharp had good reason - find out why at http://newmum.blog.com/

I hope to "sign up" a good cross section for 2009.

Watch out for the new website on 1 December 2008 but don't worry (or rejoice) I've still got a few days to go with this one!

Foresight and hindsight

Like many others, I was fascinated with the prospect of Saturday's race. I was asked many times who I thought would win but couldn't chose. Finally, I came off the fence in the week leading up to the event - but only to friends as I had not spoken to everyone involved and I did not feel sufficiently well researched to make a public prediction.

On 14 March I published a feature on Jock Waddington on http://www.parishwalk.com/ in which I wrote:

"But it's for his technique and his form over the short distances that I am marking his card as a future Parish Walk winner."

When I congratulated Robbie Callister on his second place on Saturday, he responded by saying that he wished my prediction had not been correct. referring to the above.

But this makes me sound too smart. The reality was that I said that this year would be too soon for him. I thought that the winner would come from Robbie Callister, Sean Hands or Michael George. Jock might possibly beat one of them if he got things right but not all three.

I predicted that Sean would win in a record time (once again I am in a minority who think the record can be broken) and that, if he got his pace right, Michael could get past Robbie in the final 10 miles.

How wrong could I be? Except that I predicted a top three of Sue Biggart, Janice Quirk and Marie Jackson - in that order!

Michael George may have had, by his own expectations, a disappointing race. But when it comes to predictions he was tipping Jock as the man to beat.

Under 21 woman beat the men

Breeshey Harkin won the under 21 race for women, which finishes at Peel, on her first attempt.

Her time of 6.48.28 but her 4 minutes and 25 seconds ahead of James Moore who won the men's race.

Breeshey is pictured with her father Eammon who last year finished 4th in the whole event but this year chose to "only" walk to Peel with Breeshey following illness and injury.

Breeshey, who is head girl at King Williams College, was making her debut although her participation was in doubt due to blisters incurred whilst training.

Website statistics update

Parishwalk.com continues to set new records. These are the page counts and number of people accessing the site over the past four days:

Friday - 5,452; 1,608

Satutrday - 24,562; 7,510

Sunday - 18,135; 5,598

Monday - 9,015; 3,423

Meanwhile the YouTube films have been watched almost 5,000 times to date with 3,879 hits for the film of the start alone.

The most staggering statistic from my sites however is that there have been 660,735 photo views on the Fotopic site. The most viewed picture has been accessed 3,469 times and many of them are past the 2,000 mark.

Pictures of Bethany

Sean Hands has just published some pictures of Bethany's last few miles here:

http://sean521.fotopic.net/c1533691.html

In case you have not seen it, the only picture that I previously had of the finish was by Steve Cain and its on the home page at www.manxathletics.com

Confirmation of just how bad the weather was..

As if you needed it, and you may have already seen this, but I have hardly seen any Manx news the last few days and have only just picked this story up from iomoday.

http://www.iomtoday.co.im/news/Saturday-was-second-wettest-June.4211966.jp

Personal bests

I've calculated that 34 walkers set personal bests despite the conditions.

Its quite difficult to be certain because its easy to get caught out by people entering as Jonathan Smith one year and Jon Smith another. An improvement over the previous finish does not automatically mean a PB as last year may have been slow. To prove a point, I started writing this with 33 on my list and then I remembered Marie Jackson (nee Latham) who has married since her previous entry.

So here they are and well done to all:

First time finishers

I've been working on my database this evening. This used to be the main feature of the website and inevitably as I have expanded the other services this has suffered as a result of the time and effort being exerted elsewhere.

I've had a major scare to find some corruption in the finishers list so I've had to go back to last year's copy and remerge this year's finishers. Formulas to calculate improved times etc all made sense when I created them but they have to be checked again.

The good news is that after recalculating from scratch I arrive at the same first time finishers other than Darren Mealin who was listed as Darren M Mealin last year. thanks to Suzie for letting me know.

So there appear to be 41 first time finishers and these are made up of 30 men and 11 women.

I'm under some pressure to calculate the most improved walker as a trophy from MSM has to be engraved today and I have had various messages from the organisers.

I'm also under pressure to do some of my (none Parish Walk) things and so as soon as I have worked the improved times out I will be stopping for the night.

There will be a lot more statistics on the site so throughout the week so do keep visiting. They will take priority, as usual, over attendance at the prize presentation tomorrow.

See here are the first time men again:

Maurice has clean conscience

Amid reports on the forum of people dropping litter, I'm pleased to show that one of the leaders took care to dispose of his rubbish in Maughold.

Here is a short clip (by Richard) of Maurice Bellando.

Short video of Sean Hands

If you missed Sean if full flow before his retirement, here is a short clip from Dalby.

It was taken by Richard and I found it on our collection of photos and films when editing the last YouTube film.

Final YouTube video in a few minutes

Its mainly taken where we had our three hours of fun(!) between Glen Maye and Patrick but there are also a few clips from around the Island and concludes with Jock crossing the line. Rain, rain and more rain.
